Forecast Snow Stability: The existing wet snowpack will refreeze in the colder temperatures and remain stable and well bonded. Relatively shallow deposits of fresh windslab will accumulate on North-East to South-East aspects above around 850 metres. These deposits are not expected to be significant and will be in isolated, wind sheltered locations such as gully tops, corrie rims, and scarp slopes. Some small, fresh, cornices will also form above these aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Low.
Snowpack Structure
Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight there will be occasional showers, falling as snow above 700 metres. It will then be a relatively dry day. Freezing level will be around 600 metres overnight, slowly rising to 800 metres through the day. Gale force Westerly winds will decrease through the morning to fresh and back to South-Westerlies by the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A very wet and windy day. There were frequent heavy rain showers to all levels, on a gale force Westerly wind. Freezing level was above the summits.
ObservedSnowStability: The existing snowpack has thawed and become saturated at all elevations. It is well bonded and stable. There has been some snow loss at lower levels. Remaining sections of cornice are prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard is Low.
