Avalanche Activity

Slab avalanches are the main danger. Maintaining distances between individuals is recommended. Very steep, little used slopes are to be evaluated with care and prudence.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind from northerly directions, sometimes deep wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls as well as at elevated altitudes. These can in isolated cases be released by a single winter sport participant. Additionally avalanches can also be released in deep layers and reach quite a large size in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation. The wind slabs are to be avoided in particular in very steep terrain. Below the tree line the avalanche prone locations are more rare and the danger is lower. Wind slabs are mostly small but to be assessed critically. As a consequence of solar radiation moist loose snow slides are possible as the day progresses, but they will be mostly small.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow and wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack in some places. Avalanche prone weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep, rather lightly snow-covered shady slopes. The weather conditions will facilitate a gradual settling of the snowpack in particular at low and intermediate altitudes.

Tendency

As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of moist and wet avalanches being released will increase in particular on rocky sunny slopes.
