Avalanche Activity

LO for 18/12 Areas of windslab, not extensive but poorly bonded, on mainly sheltered NW to NE aspect above 800m. Considerable hazard

Forecast Snow Stability: There will be some redistribution of the snowpack in the strong winds. Areas of windslab will be found in wind sheltered places on mainly North-West to North-East facing aspects above 800 metres with the tops of slopes and gullies being most affected. These areas will not be extensive, but will be poorly bonded. Fresh cornices, although not large, will be prone to collapse. Windward aspects will be generally scoured and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be dry overnight and through the morning with a band of snow reaching the area during the afternoon. Strong winds will be from the South-East. The freezing level will be around 700 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Showers overnight and through the day fell as snow above around 300 metres. Moderate winds were from the South-West. The freezing level was around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of windslab have been deposited on sheltered locations on mainly North to East aspects above 800 metres. Although not extensive these areas are very poorly bonded. Recent avalanche activity was noted on an Easterly aspect at an altitude of 1200 metres. On windward aspects, and at lower levels, the snowpack is generally shallow and stability is better. The avalanche hazard is Considerable
