Avalanche Activity

The surface of the snowpack will soften during the day. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the icy crust.

Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on steep shady slopes at elevated altitudes and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. In particular in extremely steep terrain and at the base of rock walls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain small and medium-sized natural moist avalanches are possible. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in isolated cases and mostly by large additional loads. The avalanches can be released in the weakly bonded old snow and reach medium size. As the day progresses the likelihood of wet avalanches being released will increase, in particular on sunny slopes. Backcountry tours should be concluded timely.

Snowpack Structure

The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften during the day. These weather conditions will bring about a gradual weakening of the snowpack. In addition the danger of moist avalanches will increase as the day progresses. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack, especially on shady slopes above approximately 2200 m, as well as on east and west facing slopes above approximately 2400 m.
