Avalanche Activity

The easterly wind has transported the fresh and old snow.

The fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. These can at their margins be released by a single winter sport participant, but they will be small in most cases. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in extremely steep terrain and at transitions into gullies and bowls, this also applies adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. Additionally avalanches can also be released in near-ground layers. Whumpfing sounds serve as an alarm sign. Small natural dry avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of a strong wind from northwesterly directions, hard wind slabs formed in the last four days over a wide area. The strong wind has transported the fresh and old snow significantly. Faceted weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects below approximately 2000 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.
