Avalanche Activity

The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs represent the main danger.

As a consequence of a strong wind, mostly small wind slabs will form. The older wind slabs will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. In some places new snow and wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. This applies in particular on east and south facing slopes and. On wind-loaded slopes and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain the situation is more precarious.

Snowpack Structure

Especially shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. The wind slabs can be released in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2400 m.
