Highlights

At the upper upper elevations, above 9,000 feet, up to 8 inches of new snow has fallen upon a weak layer of surface hoar and faceted snow old snow surfaces and crusts. In steep terrain the new snow may slough off of those old snow surfaces. Shallow pockets of wind slab 6 to 18 inches deep that were formed by west to northwest winds may also be triggered by humans or release naturally from steep avalanche starting zones. These slides could dig down into the older faceted layers. No avalanche hazards are expected in areas where last night's snow fell on bare ground.

    In steep terrain at the higher elevations soft slab avalanches and loose snow sloughs involving the new snow could be triggered by humans or release naturally on steep slopes. These slides could be 6 to 18 inches deep and may run long distances on slopes with long sustained steep pitches. Small slides can be dangerous above cliffs areas, terrain traps and during early season conditions when the snow cover is shallow.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A cold front will move through Western Wyoming after midnight. The higher elevations could receive 3 to 6 inches of new snow by Monday night. Temperatures will be in the teens and 20's in the mountains. Winds will veer to the northwest and decrease to around 10 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard on snow covered slopes below an elevation of 10,500 feet is expected to be low, but on the increase. New snow may sluff from cliff areas and very steep slopes. Small pockets of wind slab may develop. These small slabs could build to depths of 6 to 10 inches and could fail on the old snow/new snow interface.
