Avalanche Activity

Wet loose snow avalanches in all aspects.

The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust and will soften during the day. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation moist and wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses, but they will be mostly small. The more recent wind slabs are easy to recognise and can be released by large loads at their margins in particular. Avalanches can penetrate down to the ground and reach medium size in some cases.

Snowpack Structure

The small quantity of fresh snow and in particular the wind slabs formed by the strong wind are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. The high temperatures from the late morning will give rise to increasing softening of the snowpack in some cases in particular on sunny slopes.
