Highlights

The danger exists in particular in alpine snow sports terrain. Numerous medium-sized and large natural avalanches are to be expected. In isolated cases, however, very large avalanches capable of endangering exposed parts of transportation routes are also possible.

Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs above approximately 2000 m. The new snow can be released naturally in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. Loose snow avalanches and gliding avalanches and snow slides are still to be expected.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong southwesterly wind, sometimes easily released wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. On steep shady slopes and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain loose snow avalanches are possible, even very large ones in isolated cases. Below approximately 2200 m medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large moist loose snow avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of heavy snowfall and the strong southwesterly wind, a very precarious avalanche situation developed on Wednesday. The snowpack remains unstable over a wide area.

Tendency

New hazard assessment tomorrow due to the discrepancy between models regarding the expected amounts of fresh snow.
