The 2-5” of recent snowfall did not add a lot of weight to the snowpack, but I don’t trust the layer of surface hoar buried 1-2 feet deep. You are most likely to trigger persistent slab avalanches on slopes where wind drifted or stiffened the new snow.
Just before the recent snowfall, Sun Valley Heli Ski staff found the “perfect” combination of wind-loading and a weak layer when they triggered a slide large enough to bury a person (photo at right). Persistent slab avalanches can be triggered remotely—from flatter terrain above, to the sides, or below a steep slope. They can fail in unpredictable ways, breaking wider than you might expect and pulling back into lower angle terrain connected to steeper slopes.
