Large, persistent slab avalanches triggered by riders and occurring naturally continue to be reported daily - many in steep treed areas.
On Friday and Saturday, natural, remote, and rider-triggered avalanches up to size 3 were reported. This Friday MIN reports remote-triggering a large avalanche from 50 m away.
In the last week, large, persistent avalanches have been triggered or failed naturally almost daily; many occurring around steep openings in treed areas. See Feb 24 MIN and Feb 21 MIN
Widespread wind effect has impacted 20 to 30 cm of recent snow, leaving a variety of pressed surfaces into open treeline areas. A sun crust covers steep solar slopes, and moist surfaces are expected with sun and daytime heating.
In the top 100 cm of the snowpack, there are multiple concerning weak layers of surface hoar and/or crusts/facets. The majority of recent persistent slab avalanches have been on well-preserved surface hoar in sheltered areas at treeline and below.
The mid and lower snowpack are well settled.
