Regions

Clearwater, Quesnel, Jordan, Goat, Gold, Whatshan.

Travel conditions are rugged.

Continue to use good travel habits and keep cornices in mind, they are large and looming.

Confidence

High

  • Confidence is due to a stable weather pattern with little change expected.

Avalanche Summary

In the past 3 days, avalanche activity has been limited to:

  • a few cornice falls, some pulling small wind slabs on slopes below, some not

  • pinwheeling and small loose wet avalanches out of steep solar aspects at alpine and treeline elevations

This type of activity is becoming less likely with cooling alpine temperatures and repeated melt-freeze cycling on solar aspects.

Snowpack Summary

A widespread crust exists on all aspects, up to at least 2300 m. This crust may soften on steep south-facing slopes during the day. If any shred of dry snow exists on high alpine north aspects, it is almost certainly wind affected. Large, overhanging cornices linger.

The remainder of the snowpack is well consolidated with no concerns at this time.

Weather Summary

Sunday Night
Clear skies. 20 km/h northwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -2 °C.

Monday
Sunny. 30 km/h northwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -2 °C. Above freezing layer, remains possible near Quesnel.

Tuesday
Sunny. 30 km/h west ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -5 °C.

Wednesday
Mostly sunny. 20 km/h west ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -5 °C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avalanche activity is unlikely when a thick melt-freeze crust is present on the snow surface.
  • Pay attention to cornices and give them a wide berth when traveling on or below ridges.
  • Be alert to conditions that change with elevation and sun exposure.
