Regions

Northwest Inland, Kispiox, Microwave-Sinclair, Ningunsaw, South Bulkley, South Bulkley, Telkwa.

Continue to assess for wind slab as you move through terrain. Wind slabs are becoming stubborn to rider triggering but may be found in steep terrain and cross loaded features. Use extra caution during the cold weather and increase your safety margin.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches were observed in the past few days.

Thank you for all the great Mountain Information Network reports! Our forecasters really appreciate them. helpful Please keep them coming!

Snowpack Summary

Over the past few days strong easterly winds have scoured east slopes and created wind slab on south and west facing slopes.

A layer from mid November is buried down around 70cm at treeline. This layer consists of surface hoar, facets and a crust below treeline and on south facing slopes.

The depth of the snowpack at treeline varies from 80-140 cm and tapers rapidly below treeline.

Many early-season hazards such as rocks, stumps, and open creeks exist below treeline.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
