Regions

Kispiox, Ningunsaw.

Avoid wind loaded features where triggering avalanches is most likely.

The combination of 40 cm of storm snow, strong wind, and weak layers means rider triggered avalanches are likely.

Confidence

Moderate

  • Uncertainty is due to how quickly the snowpack will recover and gain strength.
  • Uncertainty is due to the speed, direction, or duration of the wind and its effect on the snowpack.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches have been reported in the past few days but observations are limited.

If you're headed into the backcountry please consider filling out a Mountain Information Network report.

Snowpack Summary

Storm totals are up to 40 cm in the west, and taper rapidly inland. Deeper deposits exist on north and east aspects, while ridge tops are generally scoured. Storm snow continues to accumulate over weak surface hoar and facets, as well as hard wind affected surfaces.

Below treeline, new snow overlies a crust.

The mid and lower snowpack is well settled with no current layers of concern. Treeline snow depths throughout the region range from 150 cm to 250 cm.

Weather Summary

Friday

Cloudy. 5 to 20 cm of snow. 40 to 70 km/h south ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -7 °C.

Saturday

Mostly cloudy. 10 to 20 cm of snow. 40 to 70 km/h south ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -1 °C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be aware of the potential for larger than expected storm slabs due to buried surface hoar.
  • Stay off recently wind loaded slopes until they have had a chance to stabilize.
  • Be alert to conditions that change with elevation, aspect, and exposure to wind.
  • Use ridges or ribs to avoid areas of wind-loaded snow.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
