You can trigger a dangerous avalanche on slopes where northerly winds drifted slabs of stiff snow over soft, weak snow near the ground. Look for and avoid these drifts below ridgelines, sides of gullies, and steep rollovers. You can recognize the dangerous areas by their smooth, rounded texture, or where you find stiff, hollow-sounding slabs. Steer around the wind-drifted features, choose slopes less than about 30 degrees, and look for safer options on southerly-facing terrain.
