You can trigger a small avalanche on north, northeast, and east-facing slopes below ridgelines and in gullies or couloirs at the highest elevations of the Grand Mesa and Battlement Mesa. You can identify these wind-loaded areas by their smooth rounded surface texture and the firm hollow feel you experience when traveling on them. Avoid these wind-loaded terrain features on slopes steeper than about 35 degrees to reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche.
