You can trigger a large and dangerous avalanche that breaks on weak snow near the ground. You can affect the weak snow in shallower areas such as near protruding rocks, trees, and at the bottom of convex slopes. You may not see signs of instability like shooting cracks and audible collapses before a slope breaks deeper, wider, and runs farther than you expect. You can find safer conditions on slopes less than about 30 degrees that are not exposed to steep slopes above.
