You can easily trigger an avalanche where you find a cohesive slab about a foot thick on top of weak, cohesionless snow near the ground. This will be on many slopes facing the northern half of the compass, generally above around 10,500 feet. Most of these avalanches will be small, but on wind-loaded slopes where the slab is thicker, you can trigger an avalanche large enough to bury you. If you want to safely travel on steep slopes, seek out wind-sheltered terrain below treeline or find slopes where the new snow fell on bare ground. If you see any cracking or collapsing in the snow around your feet this is not a safe slope you should avoid steep terrain. If you want to keep things simple, just avoid traveling on or underneath slopes steeper than 30 degrees on these aspects of concern.
