Avalanche Summary

You can easily trigger an avalanche on steep slopes with layers of recently drifted snow. Avalanches can be large enough to bury you. Look for indications of drifted areas to help you avoid them. You can see clues like cornices and scalloped surfaces. You can feel the change to stiffer, brittle snow, and it may even crack as you move into drifted areas. Wind-sheltered slopes below treeline with less than about a foot of new snow offer safer travel options.
