Avalanche Activity

From the late morning as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches. In addition the more recent wind slabs should be taken into account.

A clear night will be followed in the early morning by favourable conditions, but the avalanche danger will increase later. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation more medium-sized to large moist and wet avalanches are possible. From early morning the likelihood of moist snow slides and avalanches being released will increase in particular on very steep sunny slopes below approximately 2800 m. Avalanches can be released and reach large size in isolated cases, especially in high Alpine regions. Backcountry tours, off-piste skiing and ascents to alpine cabins should be started early and concluded timely.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell on Sunday above approximately 2000 m. Up to 1600 m rain has fallen in some regions. As a consequence of rising temperatures and rain up to intermediate altitudes the snowpack settled during the last few days. The sometimes strong wind has transported the new snow. The wind slabs of the last few days are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack on near-ridge shady slopes and in high Alpine regions. Since Tuesday the weather has been mild. The surface of the snowpack is frozen, but not to a significant depth and will soften earlier than the day before, especially at low and intermediate altitudes.
