Avalanche Activity

In some localities increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.

In some regions 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 1800 m. The sometimes storm force wind will transport the new snow significantly. The wind slabs can be released in some cases on steep northeast, southeast and southwest facing slopes above approximately 2200 m. Caution is to be exercised at their margins in particular. They are to be avoided in particular in terrain where there is a danger of falling. The avalanche prone locations are covered with new snow and are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. Caution is to be exercised in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain, in particular along the border with France. In localities where more snow falls danger level 3 (considerable) may be reached in the evening.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow is lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2200 m. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak. The sometimes strong wind will transport the new snow significantly. The prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. Snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase during the course of the night.
