Yesterday's cold front left cooler conditions in its wake. The return of clear skies today will help temperatures recover. If venturing into steep terrain be alert for icy surface conditions and small isolated pockets of wind slab.

Yesterday's cold front brought up to 2" of low-density snow to favored weather stations. Most areas received a trace or less. Combined with strong west-southwest winds there is the potential for small reactive wind slabs in isolated areas. These are most likely to be a concern in extreme terrain where a fall may have higher consequences.

Cool temperatures and moderate winds will limit surface warming today. Nevertheless, some surface softening is likely, particularly on solar slopes and in the southern part of the forecast area. Be prepared to retreat to more shaded aspects and lower-angle terrain if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Variable surface conditions and difficult access should remain top of mind for the backcountry enthusiast today. Hard and slick surfaces exist on all aspects and at all elevations. Tools like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be necessary equipment depending on where you wish to travel. In addition, keep in mind that parking may still be limited at trailheads and many access roads in the region sustained significant flood damage this winter. Factor in extra time to account for the potential of a long and arduous approach keep in mind that driving around closures can have negative impacts on the ecosystem.
