Highlights

Unusually dangerous avalanche conditions persist. Riders are triggering very large, unsurvivable avalanches daily — many from flat terrain above or below a slope. The simple formula for making it home to your people: stay off of — and far away from — all steep slopes, big or small.

These are unprecedented conditions. Do not underestimate the danger. Travel with exceptionally wide margins between you and avalanche terrain.

    Observations the past few days make it abundantly clear that triggered avalanches are very likely on and below steep slopes. These slides are breaking two to three feet deep, with some crowns extending over a thousand feet. Riders are triggering them from hundreds of feet away, from flatter ground above, below, and near avalanche terrain. They are failing on a layer of buried surface hoar sitting on a slick crust (the surface left by the January Drought). This problem is widespread and not confined to obvious start zones—small, seemingly benign features can produce dangerous avalanches.

    While this is the primary concern on shaded slopes, a second persistent weak layer may exist on sunny slopes. This is a more recently buried layer of surface hoar (2/14), also sitting on a hard crust. It may have been the culprit in a recent snowboarder-triggered slide on a south aspect in the southern Whitefish. 

    The takeaways: we are running out of safe real estate for playing. Slope angles are the answer for enjoying today’s sun and soft snow. Stick to low-angle terrain with no overhead hazard, where riding conditions remain excellent.

    There’s plenty of fresh, unconsolidated snow on the surface, and today will be the warmest day since last week’s storm cycle. Once any crusts that formed Saturday soften, sun-exposed slopes will start shedding the recent snow. Most wet slides will be small, however, they could trigger more consequential slabs on the 2/14 surface hoar/crust combo (see above).

    Don't let a sluff knock you off your feet in consequential terrain. Avoiding steep slopes for the persistent slab problem will keep you clear of this issue as well. 

    Be your own nowcaster. If you’re seeing rollerballs and pinwheels, it’s time to change aspect or move out from under steep terrain. Upper elevations will warm first and may shed snow even if the snow under your sled or feet still feels supportable.

Avalanche Discussion

It’s hard to overstate the avalanche danger in our mountains right now. Local professionals are describing the conditions as “once in a career weak layer,” “touchiest I’ve seen in a decade+,” and “terrifying”—many are saying they simply don’t trust anything right now. We’re a month in, and the problem could still worsen yet with a storm tomorrow.

Avalanches failing on the January Drought Layer have been widespread across the forecast area, and the Southern Whitefish was one of the few exceptions—until recently. After two human-triggered avalanches on a persistent weak layer near WMR on Friday (Slide 1, Slide 2), we visited Kimmerly Basin on Saturday. Following several rumbling collapses, we remotely triggered a very large avalanche from over a football field away. It ran through the entire bowl, ripped through the trees, and would have been unsurvivable. Near Stryker Ridge, riders remotely triggered two steep logging units above the skid road; one road cut released and buried a snowmobile.

Today’s warm temperatures and sun could tip the balance toward more natural slab avalanches, similar to what we saw yesterday.

As you travel, keep your party in mind—and also be aware of anyone below you. A triggered avalanche could impact people in the flats. Make a conservative plan, keep it mellow, and enjoy the new snow safely.

Please carry avalanche rescue gear — beacon, shovel, probe — if you exit WMR today. And urge others to do the same.
