Highlights

Triggering an avalanche is possible 1 to 2 feet deep on steep, wind-affected slopes. Recent snow and strong winds have created pockets of unstable snow at upper elevations. Stiff drifts or shooting cracks in steep terrain along ridges or around rocky outcrops and cliffs are signs of concern.  

Weak snow remains buried 2-4 feet deep on very steep, shaded terrain above 8,000 feet. It is unlikely you will impact these layers and trigger a large avalanche.

    Up to 18” of snow has fallen at upper elevations in the last three days, and a few more inches are expected today. Southwesterly winds have been very strong over the last 48 hours, with gusts in excess of 100 mph in places yesterday. Winds at this speed lead to erratic and unusual loading patterns. Wind slabs 1-2 feet deep will most likely be isolated and could be located in unusual places or lower on terrain features than expected. Don’t let this catch you off guard above consequential terrain. Look for stiff drifts and shooting cracks in exposed terrain.  A few more inches of snow today, along with strong westerly winds, could increase the likelihood of triggering.

    Watch for wind slabs along ridges and near rocky outcrops.

    Weak snow formed in January is buried 2 to 4 feet deep below a hard slab. It is unlikely you will impact these weak layers, but the possibility remains on very steep northerly slopes. Pockets of buried surface hoar near the top of the drought facet layer are most concerning. The distribution of this buried surface hoar is spotty, but mostly between 8,500 and 9,500 feet on very steep (35°+), shady and sheltered terrain. Identify terrain with these characteristics and evaluate carefully.

    A large avalanche south of JHMR that failed on weak snow in the middle of the snowpack. The avalanche was likely triggered by a piece of falling cornice. Most recent persistent slab avalanche events have occurred on the west and south side of the Tetons.

Avalanche Discussion

Temperatures stayed above freezing up to 8300 feet overnight. We have not had much new snow below this elevation to cause major concern for wet snow avalanche problems. Crusts at middle elevations will break down as temperatures climb today. If you travel in steep terrain below 8,500 feet and find wet surface conditions or see rollerballs coming from your skis, move to lower-angle terrain.
