A layer of weak snow is buried 3 to 4 feet beneath the snow surface. This layer has produced countless large avalanches in the past two weeks. 18-24" of snow fell in the past 4 days, adding significant stress to this weak layer. Human-triggered avalanches failing on this weak snow are likely. These slides will be very large, and likely unsurvivable. Avalanches may be triggered remotely—from gentler terrain above, below, and to the sides of steep slopes. Sluffing, cornice breaks, and wind and storm slabs can act as very effective triggers for deeper weak layers, "stepping down" to release a very large and dangerous slide.
(12/11/2022) This large avalanche occurred just outside of the ski area boundary on Bald Mountain. The human pictured is 6 feet tall. The crown was 3-4 feet thick. It failed on the layer of weak, faceted snow that is widespread in our forecast area. This slope faces NW at 8,800'.
