Throughout much of the West South, winds have calmed and loading has subsided. With the decreasing wind speeds, we aren’t likely to be building any fresh wind slabs. The main concern now is older wind slabs that are thicker, more destructive, and less likely to give you any obvious clues of instability. With good visibility, you should be able to visually identify these slabs by looking for signs of wind texture, cornices, and lens-like deposits. What will be more challenging is assessing their stability. To do so, you will need to find a representative and safe location that has all the same characteristics as the slope in question and dig or impact the snow to the depth of any potential instability. As such, the usual uptrack tests, hand pits, and stomping on test slopes may not provide you the full picture.
If you are considering steep slopes with signs of wind effect, discuss with your partner the consequences of a slide in case your assessment is wrong. While we expect this problem to be stubborn to trigger on Tuesday, the potential size of any avalanche is worth a pause. Minimize your exposure to the complex terrain features where these slabs could still release, like below cliff bands, at the tops of couloirs, and below ridge lines. There is good powder to be had in sheltered locations, so look for areas free of wind texture where the riding is both better and safer.
