Highlights

Wet loose avalanche activity on sunny aspects could be enough to carry a person today. Expect sloppy, wet surface conditions as temperatures rise, and plan to move to shadier terrain as the snow softens. Naturally occurring wet loose avalanches are possible during the warmest part of the day, especially in steep, rocky, and confined terrain.

    Sunny skies, light winds and relatively warm temperatures last night raise concerns for wet snow avalanches today. Some wet loose snow could move without a human trigger and in sunny couloirs, these could grow large enough to be dangerous. Don’t discount the force of moving wet snow and think about ways to avoid being on or under slopes that grow wet and sloppy today.

Avalanche Discussion

Lower elevation slopes (under ~8,000’) have seen temperatures above freezing during these weeks of high pressure, with sunny slopes completely bare of snow. Higher elevations (above ~8,000’) have seen minimal warming since the last snow fell on January 28th. Today is starting out warm above valley floors with temperatures already rising to or above freezing at several 10,000’ weather stations. Solar gain with limited cooling from light winds today will allow temperatures to rise higher than they have in some time. While some rollerballs were observed in steep terrain yesterday, temperatures will be a good bit higher today.
