Highlights

Triggering an avalanche large enough to carry and bury you is possible today. You’ll see tracks almost everywhere in this busy zone. Don’t think that those tracks mean a slope is safe from avalanches. Stick to riding on slopes below 30 degrees to avoid triggering an avalanche.

A rider triggered and was partially buried by a small avalanche the day before  yesterday. Recent avalanches are a clear warning that you could trigger an avalanche.

    Weak layers buried two feet beneath the surface can fail under the weight of a rider. In some areas where wind has deposited snow, these layers could be up to four feet deep. Recent avalanches, like the one triggered near Maverick the day before yesterday, are clear indicators that this avalanche problem remains a concern. You won't see a lot of avalanches or obvious signs in this zone unless you dig and look for weak layers. So far, avalanche activity on buried persistent grains have been on steep slopes.

     

     

    A rider had a very close call the day before yesterday, December 31, 2025. This avalanche illustrates the difficulty in pinpointing where you can trigger deeper weak layers. Note that this seems to be a shallow area, making it easier to trigger a weak layer.

Avalanche Discussion

Strange weather makes for strange avalanche issues. This season went from drought to firehose in a couple short weeks. Extreme wind, copious snowfall and sadly, rain was the result as Pacific storms hammered the landscape. Most of our avalanche problems have been quick to rise and quick to fall in danger, like a maritime snowpack. But the wild swings in temperature have produced impermeable rain and temperature crusts along with some faceted grains. The crusts have made for poor bonding and the weak grains closer to the ground have discouraged the sintering and rounding needed to make an entirely strong snowpack. We are trending towards good stability as time wears on but we aren’t out of the woods yet. Continue to evaluate slopes, especially high northerly terrain and keep your guard up, especially during this busy holiday time.
