We’ve had varying degrees of wind culminating in the wind event and storm we’re currently experiencing. The 3 to 12 inches we received earlier this week have drifted along upper and mid-elevation ridgelines on various aspects and many areas throughout. Wind slabs were reactive directly after the storm, but they generally trended more stable as the week progressed. However, plenty of dry snow ripe for transport remains, and freshly formed drifts sensitive to your weight or the weight of your machine likely exist. Expect strong wind out of the southwest to blow the falling and existing snow into medium to large-sized wind drifts. Dangerous wind slab avalanches are likely on loaded upper and mid-elevation terrain with slope angles over 35 degrees today.
Watch for wind lips and pillows around gullies that indicate wind transport and loading. Feel for dense or hollow-sounding snow at the surface while you travel. Shooting cracks on small test slopes indicate a nearby wind slab problem. Avoid them by sticking to protected or wind-scoured areas.
