Highlights

The overall danger rating is CONSIDERABLE today on the Manti Skyline.

The most dangerous situation today is the chance you trigger an avalanche that breaks into old weak faceted snow from earlier in the season.

Not all steep slopes will avalanche. The problem is that with buried facets, it is difficult to determine which slopes will stay in place and which ones will crash down on you.

    It is clear from the recent natural avalanche described above that there are still steep slopes that remain unstable. What is troubling to me is that there wasn't all that much wind and snow to act as a trigger. This makes me wonder how many more slopes are out there that are ready to release. I continue to avoid being on or below steep terrain on the north half of the compass where buried weak layers of faceted snow remain. It is an unpredictable situation.

Recent Activity

There was one natural avalanche that was reported on Sunday. It was in Little Pete's Hole east of Ephraim Canyon. It appears to have released during the last storm. It broke to the ground. Wind loading appears to be the trigger. DETAILS HERE

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: Another inch or so trickled in on Sunday bringing snow totals up to 7 to 8 inches in the more favored areas which seem to be in the mid Skyline from Ephraim Canyon up through about Pleasant Creek. Riding conditions are quite good. The Fairview zone didn't pick up quite as much snow out of this last storm. Check out Chris Magerl's findings from there. DETAILS HERE

Overnight temperatures are as cold as they've been. Most locations are in the single digit to sub-zero readings. Wind is almost calm.

Mountain Weather: Clear skies this morning may yeild to some clouds around the peaks later on. High temperatures will creep into the teens. Wind should stay light from the northwest for most of the day with speeds increasing slightly later on. The next chance for snow looks like Saturday when another small storm might bring a few inches.
