The November 2 layer remains the primary concern for avalanches large enough to bury a person at the upper elevations. This layer is now buried by 2-4 feet of snow at the middle and upper elevations. Much of this slab is composed of stiff snow. Observations from upper elevations in the Tetons have been limited, so there is some uncertainty in how reactive this layer is in steep, rocky terrain. What is certain is that poor snowpack structure exists at the upper elevations.
No avalanches have been observed on this layer at the middle elevations since November 5 in the Tetons. No new avalanches were reported in the backcountry yesterday. The Grand Targhee Patrol performed avalanche hazard mitigation with explosives yesterday and observed mostly stable snow.
Human triggered avalanches were observed on the November 2 layer on November 5 at Grand Targhee, and explosive triggered avalanches involving this layer were observed at JHMR on November 9. Natural activity on this layer has been curiously quiet throughout this major storm cycle, but observations have been limited due to conditions. Avoid travel on steep slopes where you experience collapsing and cracking in the snowpack.
Areas like this one where new snow has drifted beneath cliffs can create slabs 3 feet thick or more.
