Large human triggered persistent slab avalanches are possible today at middle and upper elevations. Multiple days of warm temperatures this week decreased the strength of the snowpack as meltwater made its way down to buried weak layers. Colder nighttime temperatures created a marginally refrozen, stiffer slab of snow sitting on top of those weak layers.
While a stiffer slab will make it harder to trigger an avalanche, temperatures will be exceptionally warm today, decreasing the strength once more as the day progresses. If you find poor snowpack structure (firmer snow sitting above weaker, softer snow), recent avalanches, or wet, unsupportable snow, stick to slopes less than 30 degrees. Other signs of instability, such as cracking and collapsing, may not be present before you trigger an avalanche. Be aware of the terrain above and around you, as you can trigger an avalanche from a distance (remote triggering).
