Highlights

A few inches of new snow through the day will not significantly change the avalanche danger unless southerly winds redistribute it into thicker slabs.  Dry loose avalanches may run fast over the newly formed crust at higher elevations/all aspects.  If you see blowing snow, see shooting cracks, or stiffer surface snow, dial back your terrain choices.

    3-6" of new snow landing on an unfrozen surface may bond well, especially with mild temperatures.  If it lands on a slick crust at higher elevations however, it may run fast and far as a loose avalanche, or point release.  If you are dabbling with steep, consequential terrain, these could sweep you off your feet or boost your trauma.  

    If you're seeing 6-8"+ of new snow (S Wallowas) or find deeper totals from wind drifting, you may encounter a slab.  Use your pole/look at your track digging in to judge this depth and pull off hand shears to determine if you are dealing with a slab or loose problem.

Avalanche Discussion

A true freeze overnight at upper weather stations brings a welcome relief after this abnormally hot week.  While the grass is greening in the valleys, keep in mind that if you travel upwards, you will encounter different climates and related snowpacks, from bare ground to still-saturated wet snow to dry snow sitting above a crust.  Be prepared to change your route if you encounter red flags.    

A report from the Western Wallowas mentioned small natural wet loose avalanches yesterday on a SE slope around 8000'.  These are unlikely today and would be limited to terrain below 5500'.  Enjoy the cooling!
