Fresh snowfall could form surface slabs that are sensitive to human triggering. These will be most common in the Flathead Range - which was favored by yesterday's snowfall- but will become more widespread throughout the region as snow continues to stack up. Use small and inconsequential slopes to test how new snow bonds to the surface below. Opt for simple, low-angle slopes if you find slabs 8+ inches thick that crack around your feet or machine.
Slabs will be most sensitive where recent southwest winds have drifted snow into thicker and stiffer slabs. Steer away from areas of wind-affected snow, like etched surfaces, dune-shaped features, or below cornices.
On very steep sheltered slopes, the new snow may sluff easily. Recognize that even small slides can have severe consequences if you are knocked off your line, over a cliff, into a creek bed, etc.

This is the crown of a skier-triggered soft slab in the Canyon Creek area, just outside the boundary of WMR from earlier this season. As new snow stacks up during the day, the likelihood that a rider could trigger one of these increases.
