Highlights

It will be possible to trigger avalanches in very steep terrain today. Previously wind loaded slopes in the middle and upper elevations will be the most likely areas to encounter unstable snow. Recent avalanches, shooting cracks and collapsing are obvious signs of instability and warrant moving to more simple terrain.

An avalanche fatality in LaBarge Creek in the Salt River/Wyoming Range forecast zone occurred yesterday. Limited information is available at this time. Our condolences go out to those involved. Please check back for more info as it becomes available.

    Slabs ranging from 1-2 feet in depth could be triggered by riders and skiers today. While triggering will be less likely than yesterday, the possibility remains. Numerous avalanches were reported in the Tetons two days ago. These avalanches were all human triggered and occurred in steep terrain. Expect slabs to be most sensitive in steep, previously wind loaded starting zones, and cross loaded gullies. Avoid this type of terrain, especially when travelling above terrain traps such as trees, cliffs and gullies.

    Expect the sun to play a role in increasing the likelihood of triggering both wind slabs and small dry or wet loose avalanches today.

    This avalanche was remotely triggered by a skier on a SE aspect at 7750 feet in Grand Teton National Park on Jan 10th.

    Weak layers 2-5 feet deep remain a lingering threat to riders and skiers today. Snowpit tests over the past week have shown some potential for avalanches occurring at these depths. While it is unlikely for a single person to impact these layers, larger triggers could create large avalanches today. Minimize your exposure to this type of avalanche by travelling one at a time and regrouping in true islands of safety.

Avalanche Discussion

Between Jan 2nd-9th, snow fell each day, bringing roughly 3 feet of new snow to the Tetons. This stormy period ended with cooling temperatures and a slight increase in winds out of a variety of directions. This has left a generally “right side up” upper snowpack. Exceptions to this remain in the form of wind slabs that were created as winds picked up just enough to create slabs that remain sensitive to the weight of a single person. Numerous skier triggered avalanches were reported in the Tetons over the weekend, primarily in the upper elevations, on North through East to south aspects in steep terrain. These avalanches were generally a foot in depth and likely ran on hardness changes within the most recent storm snow. Fortunately no one was buried or injured in any of the reported avalanches. Expect sensitivity of these slabs to be on the decline today. Despite this, triggering remains possible.

Deeper weak layers in the middle and lower portion of the snowpack are unlikely to activate today. An outside chance remains for very large triggers such as cornices, smaller avalanches and big groups to impact these layers and produce large avalanches.
