Highlights

No avalanches have been reported over the past week, and observations of unstable snow have steadily decreased. Currently, we expect avalanches on these weak layers to be unlikely, but we expect the issue to arise again with additional snow. But if you are near the edge of the zone or rarely traveled locations, the weak snowpack is worth considering in your decision-making.

Avalanche Discussion

Temperatures will remain cold, and we should see some sunshine. Sunny, cold, dry powder for over a week, it doesn't sound much like Washington, right? We'll settle into this high, cold, and dry pattern for much of this week. On Monday, expect a slight increase in easterly winds, particularly at mid and lower elevations and through the Stevens Pass "gap".We don't expect much wind slab formation from these winds, but pay attention to stiffening snow surfaces or cracking. These are signs you should consider lower-angle terrain or more sheltered locations. 

The weak facets and surface hoar associated with the January Drought Layer (JDL) haven't left our minds. However, with the lack of avalanche activity and stability test results showing a lack of an overlaying slab, we have enough confidence to say we don't expect this to be a current problem. However, we have pretty high confidence this problem will return to haunt us once more with additional snowfall. Also, if you are traveling near the zone boundary or areas where we typically have less information, read the adjacent zone's forecast and step into new terrain slowly, assessing the snowpack for strong over weak layering before committing to steep terrain. If you find a stiffer slab over weak, surgery snow or experience collapsing/cracking, choose lower angle slopes. 

Recent snow totals are between 2-3ft over the past 10 days. While many tests and observations show a lack of slab cohesion, we are still closely monitoring the January Drought Layer (JDL) on northerly aspects. The last whumping collapse occurred on Feb. 5th. While the overlaying slab has settled, we haven't seen an increase in avalanche activity or unstable stability test results.  Stevens Pass might not have had many observations of Persistent Slab avalanches in this zone, but there have been plenty elsewhere. Locally, observers have reported a "scary" snowpack structure. It's now waiting for the right load to become more active.

An NWAC Forecaster was in the Henry Creek Area on the 2nd. They experienced numerous localized collapses and found layers of concern in snow profiles. There was also a deep but narrow crown on a steep southern aspect at 5700ft, likely a wind slab that occurred during strong winds on Saturday.
