Highlights

Avalanche danger will be low until the area receives snowfall. Falling ice and rock are hazards for climbers on the upper mountain. Colder temperatures will keep the snow surface firm today. 

Avalanche Discussion

A snow survey was conducted on Sunday at the Gray Rock Lakes survey sight in the Eddies. Average snow depth was 44.6 inches and snow water equivalent (SWE) 16 inches. At the same time last year, snow depth was 79.5 inches and SWE 18.5 inches.

If we apply the NWS definition of normal, which is the average of a parameter over a 30-year period, the last official period being 1991-2020, we can say normal snow depth and SWE, based on the data from yesterday's observation and CDEC, is 76 inches and 27 inches, respectively. That puts us at 59% of normal for depth and SWE.
