New wind slabs have been created in the Alpine. Watch for them as you transition into your descent line.

S'ly aspects were recently baked by the strong March sun, creating a breakable crust well into the Alpine.

Summary

Weather Forecast

Daytime convective flurries will cruise through Rogers Pass today, followed by sun and cloud the next couple of days.

Today: Cloudy with isolated flurries and sunny periods, Alp high -8*C, light/mod W winds

Thurs: Sun and cloud, Alp high -8*C, light W winds

Fri: Sun and cloud, Alp high -2*C, light SW winds

Snowpack Summary

A dusting overnight (~5cm) has covered up a breakable suncrust on SE through W aspects, while N'ly aspects remain soft and dry. Yesterday's afternoon winds created isolated wind slabs in immediate lee areas and ridge crests.

Avalanche Summary

Several small, solar-induced avalanches to sz 1.5 were noted from steep, rocky S'ly aspects. Explosive testing at the W end of the park resulted in one sz 2 thin wind slab avalanche from 14 rounds in total. A icefall-triggered sz 2.5 was observed in steep, glaciated terrain below Mt Jupiter; the icefall did not trigger any surface slab.

Wind Slabs

Yesterday's spike in S'ly winds redistributed recent storm snow. Small, isolated wind slabs can be found in immediate lee areas/ridge crests in the Alpine.

  • Be careful with wind loaded pockets, especially near ridge crests and roll-overs.
  • Use caution in lee areas. Recent wind loading has created wind slabs.

Aspects: North, North East, East, West, North West.

Elevations: Alpine.
