Regions: Glacier.

Snowpack conditions continue to be touchy for human triggering of avalanches. Several serious recent skier involvements have occurred. Stability tests are in the easy to moderate range on a widespread weak layer of surface hoar & facets buried 50 cm.

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

A 50cm storm slab overlies a weak surface hoar/facet layer, and on steep southerly aspects a sun crust. This problem has caused several skier/rider involvements over the last 2 days. It may still be touchy in areas that have not yet avalanched.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 4

Wind Slabs

Moderate to strong southerly winds over the past 3 days loaded lee terrain and formed windslabs on open slopes. These slabs may be easily triggered from steep terrain.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Deep Persistent Slabs

A weak basal crust is present in the alpine and has been responsible for large avalanches. Thin snowpack areas, along ridgecrests and in rocky areas are weak and facetted. These deep layers may be triggered by riders/skiers from thin snowpack areas.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely

Expected Size: 3 - 4
