Three to five inches of new snow fell yesterday in the mountains accompanied by moderate west-southwest winds. The new snow accumulated on faceted snow in most areas. Look out for thin, soft wind slabs in lee areas near ridges at higher elevations. These isolated terrain features hold the avalanche hazard today. The avalanche danger may be Low today, but the shallow, early season snowpack continues to hide obstacles.

Areas favored by this upslope event may receive another inch tomorrow. Wind will continue, largely from the west, in the 20-25 mph range, easily drifting the new snow at the ridgetops. Temperatures will remain in teens and low twenties.Expect some soft slabs tomorrow where new snow accumulates on faceted north facing slopes or clings to slick temperature crusts. The size of these wind slabs will be determined by the amount of new snow falling tonight. Small and isolated pockets of wind slab which still warrant a Low rating seem likely. The potential exists for more problematic wind slabs depending on total snowfall and wind overnight. Be sure to check snowfall totals tomorrow and consider the consequences of a small slide in our rocky early season snowpack.
