Snowpack

• South of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine, the near-surface layers of the snowpack are shaped by the wind, especially in the vicinity of ridgelines and passes. Especially in areas with little snow in the south and east, the entire snowpack has become faceted in places. Isolated avalanches may be triggered in weak layers. On the Main Alpine Ridge in Valais between the Dufourspitze and the Nufenen Pass as well as on the central part of the southern flank of the Alps, fresh snow will be deposited on Monday on a highly faceted and often thin snowpack. Avalanches may be triggered in the weak snowpack, especially on western, northern and eastern slopes.
• North of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine and in the extreme west of Lower Valais, the snowpack is strongly shaped by the wind in many places. The snowdrift accumulations formed by the foehn wind on Saturday are becoming increasingly stable. Only on slopes sheltered from the wind is there still loose, faceted snow on the surface, sometimes with hoar frost. The middle part of the snowpack is also often well consolidated and therefore there is little expectation that avalanches will be triggered deep in the old snowpack.

Weather forecast to Monday

Conditions will be very cloudy and there will be some snowfall on the Main Alpine Ridge and to the south of it. The snowfall level will be 1000 m. Otherwise, there will be some sunshine with patchy cloud.

Fresh snow

From Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon above approximately 1400 m:

• Main Alpine ridge in Valais from the Dufourspitze to the Nufenen Pass and central part of the southern flank of the Alps: 5 to 15 cm, and locally up to 20 cm;
• rest of Main Alpine Ridge: a few centimetres, otherwise dry

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, -1 °C in the north and -4 °C in the south.

Wind

• moderate to strong southerly winds in the north at high altitudes on Sunday evening, easing during the night
• moderate to strong foehn wind in the foehn wind valleys of the north
• otherwise mostly light to moderate.

Weather review for Sunday

In the north, conditions were quite sunny despite the broken cloud cover. The south was mostly cloudy. Some snow fell above 1200 m.

Fresh snow

From Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon above 1500 m

• Main Alpine ridge in the Valais from the Dufourspitze to Monte Leone, Bernina: 5 to 10 cm
• other regions of the western and central parts of the Main Alpine Ridge, central part of the southern flank of the Alps: a few centimetres, otherwise dry

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, +3 °C in the north and -3 °C in the south.

Wind

Often moderate at high altitudes, sometimes strong from the south to southeast on the northern Alpine ridge

Outlook

Conditions will be very cloudy in the south on Tuesday and Wednesday and there will be a little snow, especially overnight to Tuesday. Conditions will be very sunny in the north on Tuesday, but there will be less sunshine on Wednesday. The mostly weak southerly wind will freshen up on Wednesday as the day progresses.

Avalanche danger will not change significantly in the south on Tuesday and will decrease slowly on Wednesday. Avalanche danger will decrease in the north.
