Regions

South Okanagan, Shuswap, North Okanagan.

New snow is not bonding to a widespread surface hoar layer. Even small avalanches could be a problem with early season obstacles. Avoid steep terrain that could funnel loose snow.

Confidence

Low

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches have been reported in this area. New snow is not bonding well to the surface hoar layer and is likely producing small dry loose avalanches in steep terrain features.

Snowpack Summary

10 to 15 cm of new snow has buried a surface hoar layer formed during recent clear, cool weather on various surfaces from melt-freeze crusts on solar-facing, wind-affected snow surfaces and facets.

Snowpack depths at treeline are 50 to 70 cm and generally faceted with larger faceted snow crystals near the base of the snowpack. Below treeline snowpack depths drastically taper.

Weather Summary

Sunday Night

Partly cloudy, no new precipitation. Southwest alpine wind, 10 to 20 km/h. treeline temperature -5 °C.

Monday

Cloudy with scattered flurries with 3 to 5 cm accumulation, switching to rain overnight. West wind switching to south 10 to 15 km/h. Treeline temperature -5 °C.

Tuesday

Cloudy with mixed precipitation, 3 to 5 mm. Southwest alpine wind 30 to 40 km/h. Treeline temperature 3 °C. Freezing level 2700 to 3000 m.

Wednesday

Cloudy with scattered flurries, 3 to 5 cm. Southwest alpine wind 10 to 15 km/h. Treeline temperature -1 °C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be aware of the potential for loose avalanches in steep terrain where snow hasn't formed a slab.

Problems

Loose Dry

Loose Dry avalanches are the release of dry unconsolidated snow and typically occur within layers of soft snow near the surface of the snowpack. These avalanches start at a point and entrain snow as they move downhill, forming a fan-shaped avalanche. Other names for loose-dry avalanches include point-release avalanches or sluffs.
