Highlights

The General Avalanche Hazard this morning is MODERATE, and could rise to CONSIDERABLE during the day depending on the amount of sun impacting the snowpack. Overnight lows hovered near freezing at the high elevation, and temporarily increased stability. Daily warming and sunshine will continue to melt the upper snowpack resulting in wet, loose surface slides, along with the possibility of deeper wet slabs. These slides may be started by backcountry travelers, snow falling off cliff areas, or cornice collapses. Avoid steep ravines and road cuts where small wet slides can be dangerous.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A weak system moving across the area could produce a few snow showers tonight, but with little accumulation. During the night and into Thursday, winds should increase to near 30 mph out of the Southwest. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the mid 20s in the mountains, and near freezing in the valley, before rising into the 40s up high and 50s down low. Skies should be mostly to partly cloudy.AVALANCHE HAZARD FORECAST FOR THE TETON, TOGWOTEE PASS, AND SOUTHWEST TRAILS AREAS:The General Avalanche Hazard tomorrow morning is expected to be LOW at the mid and upper elevation and MODERATE at the low elevation, before rising to MODERATE at all elevations in the afternoon. Below freezing overnight temperatures will temporarily lead to a stabilizing trend at the mid and upper elevation. The hazard will raise proportional to the amount of heat and sun absorbed by the snowpack during the day. Any extended periods of sunshine this time of year can rapidly warm the upper snowpack and wet, loose slides can result. These slides may be started by backcountry travelers, snow falling off cliff areas, or cornice collapses.
