Avalanche Activity

Slab avalanches are the main danger. In addition the danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase from the early morning.

The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence above the tree line. These can be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. Significant warming to 2700 m: On steep sunny slopes and at the base of rock walls the likelihood of dry and wet avalanches will increase during the day. Medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large natural avalanches are possible. The peak of avalanche activity will be reached in the course of the day probably, but already the late morning at low and intermediate altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

In these regions above approximately 1300 m a lot of snow is lying for the time of year. As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. The strong wind has transported a lot of snow. In the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In particular intermediate and high altitudes as well as in places that are protected from the wind: The snowpack is dry and has a loosely bonded surface. Sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m: The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack.

Tendency

The weather will be mild. Midday and afternoon: Gradual increase in danger of dry and moist avalanches as a consequence of solar radiation.
