The new and drifted snow forecast for today and tonight will thicken and stiffen slabs that have already proven reactive to the weight of a person or snowmachine. The hazard will be greatest on or below steep leeward and cross-loaded slopes near ridges and downwind of saddles and passes. The slides will run fast and far on the mid-January crust, and may entrain lots of soft, loose snow. You aren't going to be riding out of these. The potential for natural and remotely-triggered avalanches makes it critical to avoid being on or under steep start zones - those 30 degrees or steeper. Visibility is notoriously poor in the Swan Range, so use maps and vegetation clues to keep you out of avalanche runouts.
