Regions

North Rockies, East Kakwa, Kakwa, McGregor, Pine Pass, Tumbler.

Heavy snowfall and strong wind will rapidly increase avalanche danger over the day. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended if you find 25+ cm of new snow on Monday.

Confidence

Moderate

Avalanche Summary

We haven't received any recent avalanche observations but expect that storm slabs released during stormy conditions on Sunday. We anticipate natural avalanche activity on Monday as stormy conditions continue.

Snowpack Summary

Around 15 to 30 cm of snow accumulated over the weekend and another 20 to 30 cm is forecast for Monday. Strong southwest wind will mean even deeper deposits in leeward terrain features.

All this snow is loading a weak layer of surface hoar and/or faceted grains found in the middle of the snowpack. The layer of facets may be associated with a hard melt-freeze crust. In thin snowpack areas, faceted grains may extend to the ground.

Average snow depths at treeline range from 50 to 100 cm and decrease rapidly at lower elevations.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Travel in alpine terrain is not recommended.

  • Be cautious of buried obstacles, especially below treeline.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
