Avalanche forecast
Avalanche danger
Highlights
Triggering an avalanche today would be very unlikely. Firm snow surfaces will create slick conditions for travelers on skis and snowboards. Sliding falls are more of a hazard today than avalanches. Snowmachines will have a difficult time staying cool.
Avalanche Discussion
Travel conditions in the mountains are not the most friendly right now. A multi-day warmup left the upper snowpack with a myriad of melt-freeze crusts across most all aspects and elevations. North winds have scoured the snow surface, leaving very little soft snow to be found right now. The biggest hazard today is traveling on these firm snow surfaces. Sliding falls and difficult travel on snowmachines, will create unique challenges today. The upper snowpack will remain locked up with cooler temperatures and north winds. Snowshoes and bicycles might be the preferred modes of mountain travel today. We've noticed several large cornice falls over the past week. If you are traveling in the mountains today, make sure to give yourself plenty of space around large, over-hanging cornices.
