Highlights

Below freezing temperatures have refrozen the snowpack and the avalanche danger is LOW. The Everitt Memorial Highway is open and climbing season on Mount Shasta is here. Safety and sanitation are two top management priorities. Carry an ice axe, crampons and helmet, know how to use them and know your limits. Recreate responsibly. Keep the mountains looking better than you found, always.

    Cornices are unlikely to fall on their own today, but they are hard to predict. It could still be possible to trigger one by walking near the edge. Identify terra firma by observing trees or rocks sticking out of the snow.

Avalanche Discussion

  • The time has come and yes it's true: The Everitt Memorial Highway is OPEN. 
  • Our last forecast of the season is tomorrow. We will issue our spring statement on Sunday. The doors of the avalanche center will close, and the switch flipped to climbing season. The lights are still on and our house is full of our seasonal climbing rangers. We are getting our ducks in a row and will begin mountain patrols immediately
  • Climbing advisories and climbing route observations will continue on the website
  • PLEASE, recreate responsibly, folks. This means to plan and prepare properly. Be honest with your own and your groups skills and abilities. Be kind to others. Respect the mountains and Mother Nature. Pick up after yourself. Leave-No-Trace. Don't love to death, the places that we love
  • Remember, it is required to pack out your human waste if entering the Mount Shasta Wilderness area. Free wag bags are available at open trailheads. Bunny Flat is the only open trailhead at this time
  • Also required is a summit pass and wilderness permit. You can get all of these things, self-issue, at Bunny Flat or the Mt Shasta or McCloud Ranger Stations, 24/7. Annual passes are available inside the ranger stations during business hours, M-F, 8-4:30pm. Have your pass/permit ready to show rangers. Yes, we will check
