LOW avalanche danger persists at all elevations. Firm “slide for life” conditions and rockfall resulting from daytime warming are the greatest hazards in the backcountry.  Monitor for unstable snow in isolated areas such as steep southerly aspects and confined, rocky areas where warming is amplified.

Expect another beautiful California day with warm temperatures, light winds, and full sun. This may lead to some surface softening and an increased risk of rockfall on solar aspects.  Steep SE-S-SW aspects with direct sun will be places where this is most likely. Particularly at lower elevations, areas near rock out cropping’s or cliff bands, and southerly facing couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified. While avalanche activity remains unlikely it is always a good idea to keep an eye out for signs of excessive warming such as moist punchy surface snow, rollerballs & pinwheels, and increasing boot penetration. Be prepared to retreat to more shaded aspects if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Finding areas of unstable snow will be difficult today however our current variable and challenging surface conditions should remain top of mind for the backcountry traveler. Snowpack settlement and overall waning coverage are leading to the reemergence of many obstacles such as fallen trees, exposed rocks, and open creaks.  While it is possible to find soft recrystallized snow in sheltered areas on northerly aspects, a variety of surface crusts and hard and slick surfaces are commonplace throughout the forecast area, particularly in shaded and exposed areas near and above treeline. Be aware of your exposure to terrain hazards such as long steep slopes, cliff bands, tight rocky chokes, and stands of trees. Even an otherwise innocuous fall could easily lead to a perilous “slide for life” situation. Slow it down and remain vigilant if you find yourself in steep or consequential terrain. Equipment like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be critical even at lower elevations or in protected areas you may not typically expect to need them.
