    New snow and wind will create wind slab avalanche problems today.  Strong 50+ MPH winds will transport the fresh snow and deposit wind slabs in sheltered terrains, such as leeward slopes, cross-loaded gullies, or concave terrain features. Leavitt Lake received 2 inches of new snow last night and another 3 inches is forecasted for today. 5inches of snow may not seem like a lot, but wind transport can create wind slabs 3-5x in depth compared to snowfall totals. Avoid unstable snow by looking for wind-deposited snow and avoiding areas where slabs have formed, feel for hollow snow under your sled and take mental notes on how the snow texture changes throughout the landscape. After a hard refreeze  and the departure of spring-like conditions,  surface conditions will be variable

Avalanche Discussion

  • A hard refreeze last night and strong winds will keep loose wet concerns at bay today, but temperatures and strong April sunshine will return starting Wednesday.This includes concerns for cornice failures as well.
  • Saturday will be our last Avalanche Forecast of the season.
  • The BWRA will close to Motorized use on Sunday, April 30th, per the BWRA management plan.
